How to set up Google Maps for your business
You may have noticed that Google maps are now appearing regularly in the search results for location based searches such as "Vauxhall Dealer Leicester".
You might also be surprised to learn that adding your business to these maps and appearing high up in Google is free and takes very little effort. Just follow the simple steps below:
Visit www.google.com/local/add/lookup. If you already have a Google Account, sign in with your email and password, and if you don't have one you can click Create an account now to get started.
Now you'll see Required Info - enter your company details and click next.
If your business is shown on the screen select it, click next and follow steps 1 to 5 below. If your business name does not appear select my business does not appear here and follow steps 2 to 5 below.
- Choose Edit your business listing to change the details of the listing
- You will be taken to a page which allows you to select categories for your business. The most suitable categories would probably be Retail Stores > Retail Stores - Automobiles, Retail Stores - Automobiles - New and Retail Stores - Automobiles - Used. Complete this and click next.
- This will take you to a page to where you can add further details such as opening times. Complete these and click next.
- On the next page you can add photos if you wish. This is a great opportunity to display a picture of your dealership (if appropriate) - it can reassure visitors that they're at the right place when they arrive, and helps with building your brand online. If you do not want to add photos just click next.
- When you have added any custom attributes you might need on the next page, click finish to confirm your listing.
Now you have you a number of options on how to confirm your listing. As you are using the business number we recommend either phone or post, but if you select phone please be aware the phone will ring almost instantly with an automated message; you will then need to enter into the phone the pin number which appears on the screen. Choosing post will mean a post card will arrive from Google in 2-3 weeks. You will need to input the number you receive in the post into Google maps to confirm your listing.
You're done! Currently Google say that it can take 4 weeks for your details to appear. Should you need to edit your details in the future, you can simply log in again and make the changes.
